about
When I finished the song and started planning the release, I had no idea of the circumstances we'd be living in now. The title and chorus lyrics, intended as an overly dramatic warning to myself, an attempt to breathe levity into other moments, now seem to recontextualize the song as a whole.
This was not my intent, but I feel I have to acknowledge it. I had considered renaming it or tweaking the lyrics or maybe moving the release, but I feel that would have defeated the purpose of the song. This song is not about giving up, but striking a balance between where you've been and where you are
lyrics
I went across the water,
to see if I’d belong
I found something half as good,
‘cause I couldn’t bite my tongue
I serenaded empty sheets,
I drank to absent friends
Oh No, Give Up
Skip straight to the end
I made peace with pleasantries,
with minding my own mind
Sitting still and sleeping late,
just haemorrhaging the time
Small comforts gleaned,
from blinking screens,
stretched out on the floor
Oh No, Give Up
You wrote this song before
I pick a point and focus
I run my lines each morning
I’d slip away most afternoons
If I were you
How pedestrian the trauma,
for such violence in the blood
I’d have spoke up sooner,
but I couldn’t find the words
